Sun Products Awards “Greenest Grade School”

All LogoRiverwalk Jazz is proud to be sponsored by the Sun Products Corporation, which has been “thinking green” from its very start in September, 2008. Sun was the first U.S. manufacturer to harness biodegradable plant-based ingredients in its detergent formulas, and is today the leading maker of eco-friendly store brand laundry and cleaning products.

Last April, Sun awarded a new playground—made from recycled plastics such as laundry detergent and fabric conditioner bottles—to Cooper Elementary School in Bentonville, Arkansas, as the winner of a competition to be recognized as the “Greenest Grade School.” Congratulations to the students—and to our sponsor.

Josephine Conquers Europe

Vienna, Austria, June 30, 2009

Two years ago, Chris Tyle wrote an article for Jazz Me News about the hit show in Paris, La Recherche de Josephine. I’m happy to report that we just finished a successful run in Vienna, Austria and marked our 3-year anniversary of the show. Over the past three years Josephine has been presented over 350 times throughout France as well as in Spain, Italy, Denmark, Switzerland, and now Austria and Germany.

Landing SignJust Ask

Just ask and we'll answer your questions about The Landing, The Jim Cullum Jazz Band, and Riverwalk Jazz on the radio.

Dear Riverwalk Jazz:

I have a Mac. What can I download to listen to your music?
Norman Goldberg

Editor responds: Norman, our Mac users report success using the Windows Media Mac version, available for free download from Microsoft.com here.

Dear Riverwalk Jazz:

I heard Jim and the boys play about three years ago when in San Antonio—never to be forgotten. I've heard Louis Armstrong and his All Stars (in 1950) and Papa Celestine and I must say that Jim is as evocative as either of them. I hope to make it back to San Antonio to hear him again, some day—if we both live long enough!

Regards, longingly, Jim Rodgerson, Toronto, Canada

Editor responds: Jim, we're still here swinging away in San Antonio. Thanks for the kind words, and be sure to say hi when you visit.

Sharing Music the Old-Fashioned Way

Beautiful Changes Label

In 1937, RCA Victor Records released a 78rpm single of Benny Goodman and his orchestra playing "Pop-Corn Man," backed with "oooOO-OH BOOM" on the B-side. Then, for reasons that have never been made clear, the company recalled the record and substituted "Always and Always" for "Pop-Corn Man." As a result, "Pop-Corn Man" became the rarest of all Benny Goodman discs. At one point, Goodman experts believed that fewer than 10 copies were known to exist. A friend of mine bid $1,200 for it at an auction—and lost. More >>

How I Lose Piano Players

By Ruby Braff, January 9, 1957

[Ed. note: the late jazz trumpeter Reuben "Ruby" Braff was renowned—especially among musicians—for "pulling no punches." Many of his strong opinions found their way into the jazz press, such as in this article reproduced (with permission) from a 1957 issue of Down Beat.]

Dick Hyman and Ruby Braff

For years it has been my misfortune to be dragged by piano players because I love that instrument and its possibilities so. I lose more pianists that way, but it can't be helped.

It seems that playing piano is too much of a job for the average piano player. Most persons started playing piano because it was conveniently at their disposal. Had they attempted some instrument not connected with the rhythm section, they would have had to realize that it's no fun to accompany the pianist, because he's got more control than anyone else in the band. Mark DeboskeyRiverwalk Jazz Broadcast Partner KSDS-San Diego Wins 2 Prestigious Awards

Mark Deboskey, KSDS-FM/Jazz88 station manager, has been named regional “Jazz Educator of the Year,” by the California Association of Music Education (CMEA)/Southern Border Section, and the station he leads earned a national “My Source Community Impact Award for Engagement,” from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Both awards recognized the station’s innovative programs and services to young musicians.

We at Riverwalk Jazz offer our congratulations and thanks to Mark and KSDS for furthering the causes of Jazz Education and public broadcasting.

To quote their website, "Jazz is a true art form, and it's presented live and spontaneously on KSDS, a rarity in the current entertainment scene. KSDS remains one of the few radio stations in America to offer full-time, undiluted Jazz programming, acknowledging the heritage of this wonderful music while helping it live on through today’s artists."
