This Month on Riverwalk Jazz
The Jim Cullum Jazz Band Presents
1/7 Jumpin’ on the Black and Whites: The Magic Touch of Teddy Wilson Famous for his light touch on the keyboards, Wilson became a star of the Swing Era playing with Benny Goodman’s small ensembles, where he made history as one of the first black players to appear in a public concert with whites. Pianist Dick Hyman and vocalist Topsy Chapman recall Wilson's musical legacy.
1/14 Hot Jazz Down Under: Gems from Aussie Jazzman Bob Barnard The spotlight is on the veteran Australian cornetist, a leading light of Australian jazz and musical "soul-mate" of Jim Cullum. The two friends "trade fours" and swap stories about their lives in jazz.
1/21 Sidney Bechet: Jazz Immortal Bechet was an early master of the clarinet and soprano saxophone. He spent the later part of his life in France, where he composed his hit tune "Petit Fleur." Actor Vernel Bagneris tells Bechet’s story. Featured soloists are reedmen Evan Christopher and Bob Wilber—who studied with Bechet.
1/28 Jazz Goes to the Movies: A Look at Jazz Music & Musicians in Film The spotlight is on jazz musicians like Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Lionel Hampton, who were featured in Hollywood movies—playing speaking acting roles as well as performing their music. Jazz writer Scott Yanow, author of Jazz on Film, gives his favorite picks.
Note: Riverwalk Jazz public radio broadcasts are recorded well in advance of their airdates. These listings do not reflect live appearances at the Landing in San Antonio. For what's happening at the Landing, check our calendar.
New HBO Series Features Riverwalk Jazz Guest Artists
Boardwalk Empire, a new HBO series produced and directed by Martin Scorsese, is in production now and will air later this year. The series chronicles the life and times of Nucky Thompson (played by Steve Buscemi), the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster.
In the film, our good friends—bass saxophonist Vince Giordano, violinist Andy Stein and trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso—perform hot music from the 1920s (the beginning of the "Jazz Age") on-camera and dressed in period costumes, playing on period instruments. The scenes involving the band depict a wild party in Atlantic City the last night before Prohibition went into effect in January, 1920.
For more information, visit the Boardwalk Empire website here.
Just Ask
Just ask and we'll answer your questions about The Landing, The Jim Cullum Jazz Band, and Riverwalk Jazz on the radio.
Dear Riverwalk Jazz:
I am looking for a recording of the song "Shine" by Benny Goodman Trio (with Teddy Wilson on piano, Gene Krupa on drums). It is my father's favorite song, and my >brother and I have been looking for this song (with ONLY the trio) for many years. Maybe you can help us find it for our so beloved father? Kind regards, Anna Strömberg, Mantorp, Sweden
Editor responds:
Anna, it's good to know that the digital age has broken the "geography barrier" and that you are able to hear our radio series in far-off Sweden. More good news is that this same technology makes searching for music far more simple, effective and far-ranging than ever before in history.
You can go to Amazon.com by clicking here. You may choose to search other retailing sites, but my searching usually ends at Amazon. You then select "Music," then enter search words "Benny Goodman Trio" and "Shine." Another method is to go to Google.com and enter the same search words, but an Amazon.com search narrows it down a bit to mostly CDs.

The Dozens: Hoagy Carmichael
By Thomas Cunniffe, courtesy jazz.com
Hoagy Carmichael was born in Bloomington, Indiana on November 22, 1899. His given name, Hoagland, derived from a circus troupe “The Hoaglands” who stayed with the Carmichaels during Mrs. Carmichael’s pregnancy. Hoagy’s mother was a pianist, and by the age of 6, Hoagy was playing and singing himself. Hoagy received a law degree from Indiana University, but was unable to find lasting employment as a lawyer. Part of the reason was that he had discovered jazz, and his new friend Bix Beiderbecke encouraged him to write music. More >>
A History of New Orleans Music in 100 Tracks (Part One)

Edited by Ted Gioia, courtesy jazz.com
New Orleans does not rank in the top 50 cities in the US, when measured by population. It has fewer inhabitants than Tucson or Anaheim. In area it is roughly five percent of the size of Kern County out in California. The city's economic importance in the US reached its peak back in the nineteenth century, and never really recovered from the railroad replacing the steamboat as a preferred method of transporting people and freight.
Yet if one could measure the influence of its music on the global soundscapes, New Orleans’s importance would be off the charts. More >>
