This Month on Riverwalk Jazz

The Jim Cullum Jazz Band Presents

Lil Hardin Armstrong3/4 Behind Every Great Man: Lil Hardin and Louis Armstrong
Lil Hardin shares stories of her relationship with Louis Armstrong and how their seven years together helped launch him to stardom. Our show features works from Armstrong’s influential recordings of the 1920s, dubbed by author Terry Teachout "The Old Testament of classic jazz." See below for Chris Albertson's blogs on Lil.

Dave Bennett and Jim Cullum3/11 Keeping it Hot: The Jim Cullum Jazz Band with Trumpeter Bria Skonberg & Clarinetist Dave Bennett
These two 20-somethings of old-school jazz—Bria Skonberg and Dave Bennett—have embraced the "good stuff." They keep the music alive with busy, globe-trotting performing schedules. This week they show off their "chops" in a sizzling-hot Landing jam session.

Helen Ward & Benny Goodman3/18 "Not Just Another Pretty Face:" Girl Singers of the Swing Era
Helen Humes, Helen Ward, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and others made their names singing in front of famous swing bands of the 1930s and '40s. But many went beyond the "girl singer" stereotype to become stars in their own right.

Gary Giddins3/25 Let’s Talk Jazz: A Conversation with Gary Giddins
The progression of jazz and its lasting affect on American culture is the focus. Host David Holt welcomes jazz critic and award-winning author Gary Giddins to discuss his new book, Jazz, which navigates 100 years of the music from New Orleans through swing, bebop and beyond. Visit Gary Giddins' website here.

Note: Riverwalk Jazz public radio broadcasts are recorded well in advance of their airdates. These listings do not reflect live appearances at the Landing in San Antonio. For what's happening at the Landing, check our calendar.

March is Music in Our Schools Month

MENC logoThe Music Educators National Conference (MENC) is sponsoring Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM). Please join Riverwalk Jazz in supporting this worthy effort by visiting their website, where you will find out how to participate in MIOSM and promote support for school music. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children—and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music.

What a delightful evening [JCJB concert with Dick Hyman in Corpus Christi, February 11]. I moved to Corpus Christi in 1977 from San Antonio. As a young married woman in 1963, I remember hearing Jim Cullum Sr. and Jim Cullum Sr., Jim Cullum Jr. in 1973his band in the early days of the Kiwanis Club. What fun and such great music. Then came The Landing and Hemisfair which surely changed our city—for the better. It was a fabulous treat for me to hear your concert tonight. Thank you, you are still the best. Is Jim Cullum Sr. still living? Keep up sharing your great gifts of music, conversation, enjoyment and love of sharing your music. Thank you,
Gloria Lear

Editor responds:

Gloria, the concert in Corpus Christi was big fun for us, especially getting to perform again with the great Dick Hyman. Though his legacy lives on through Jim Jr., sadly, Jim Sr. (pictured above) passed away in 1973.

Hi all: Great program. Our public radio station (WOI classical), Ames, Iowa, does not carry Riverwalk Jazz anymore, which is a shame. We really miss it. Regards,
Jerry Chase

Editor responds:

Jerry, the good news is that you can hear Riverwalk Jazz right from our website at www.riverwalkjazz.org. Click on Listening Room. In the meantime, WOI might like to know that listeners miss the weekly broadcast.

When Apple Inc. announced the iPad last month, CEO Steve Jobs demonstrated the device with a surprising choice of music. The first notes publicly heard on the new device were not a snippet of cutting-edge contemporary pop—not Radiohead or Norah Jones—but a jazz classic recorded in Paris 73 years ago. It was "Swing Guitars" by guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli, with the Quintette of the Hot Club of France. More >>

At one point during my 1953 interview with Frank Sinatra for Down Beat magazine, he began lamenting the passing of the big bands. "When I was with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey," he told me, referring to his work in the 1930s, "I learned about tempos—which ones for which tunes—and how to mix them up and pace a show. I'd surely like to see the bands come back." More >>
